One freezing night in Houston, temperatures plummeted to unusual lows, and Andrea Soliz was making her rounds near the warehouse where she worked. That’s when she noticed a small, shivering figure in the shadows. Upon closer inspection, she realized it wasn’t just one dog—it was two: a frail mother dog and her tiny, frightened puppy.

“I could see them shivering,” Soliz told The Dodo. “They were terrified.”

The puppy looked relatively healthy, but the mother dog, whom she would later name Nixi, was astonishingly thin. It was clear that she had been giving every ounce of her strength to keep her baby fed and safe. Their bond was undeniable; Nixi’s instinct to protect her pup was fierce, even in the harshest conditions.

Soliz and her colleagues tried to approach the dogs, but fear kept them at bay. Thinking quickly, Soliz gathered blankets and set up a safe spot in the warehouse, hoping they would survive the night. She returned the next morning to check on them—and to her relief, they had made it through. Their trust in humans, though tentative, had begun to grow.

“I just held the little one, and she let me,” Soliz recalled. “She allowed me to pet her. She let me play with her. It was a small step, but it was everything.”

Soliz brought both dogs home to stabilize their lives. When Nixi realized she was safe, her cautious demeanor began to soften, revealing a gentle, affectionate personality. She thrived in a warm environment, and her bond with humans deepened with every passing day.

Eventually, Nixi’s puppy was adopted into a loving home, but Nixi needed additional care. “At home, she would place her tiny paws on my hands, and I thought, ‘That’s it. She’s mine,’” Soliz said.

As Nixi settled into her new life, Soliz learned more about her favorite things: cuddles, gentle play, and trips to the beach. Each day, Nixi’s playful, loving personality blossomed, revealing the dog she had always been beneath the fear and hardship.

“She is a completely different dog now,” Soliz shared. “It’s amazing to see her personality bloom.”
