Puppy Left Behind Offers His Only Piece of Bread to Rescuers
In the middle of nowhere in South Africa, a tiny puppy was left behind — forgotten by the world, without his mom, without his siblings, and without the warmth of a family.
His name was Gunnar, just 7 weeks old. During a recent animal control rescue, his mother and littermates had been taken to safety, but by mistake, Gunnar had been left behind. For an entire week, he endured the cold, the hunger, and the crushing loneliness all on his own.
When Rachael Sylvester, founder of the dog rescue Sidewalk Specials, arrived to save him, she was bracing herself for the worst. But what she saw broke her heart in a way she would never forget.
“As I walked closer, I saw this fragile little body trembling,” Sylvester recalled. “And in his mouth, he was carrying a piece of dry bread — nearly as big as him. Despite everything, his tail was wagging, his eyes were shining … and it was like he wanted to share his last meal with us.” 🥺💔
That single moment told the whole story. After a week of surviving alone, Gunnar still had the strength to trust, to give, to hope.But beneath his brave spirit, his tiny body was failing. At the vet, tests revealed severe anemia, tick bite fever, one of the worst tick and worm infestations they had ever seen, and a painful eye infection. The truth was devastating: if no one had found him, Gunnar wouldn’t have survived much longer.
Still, his resilience carried him through the night. “His positive attitude was unbelievable,” Sylvester said. “Even when he was weak and sick, he kept wagging his tail as if to say, ‘I’m not giving up.’”
After intensive treatment, Gunnar began to heal. And then, the miracle he had been waiting for arrived — a woman named Freya adopted him.
From the very first day, Gunnar curled up in her arms as though he had been waiting his whole life for her. “He wasn’t difficult to open up at all,” Freya said. “It’s like he knew … he was finally home.”
Years have passed since that rescue. The starving puppy who once clung to an old piece of bread now spends his days chasing rocks — his favorite hobby — and showering his mom with love. The lonely nights on the cold ground are gone. Now Gunnar has warm beds, long walks, and most importantly, a family who adores him.
