In Poway, California, Kamden Houshan was born facing a tremendous challenge: a massive tumor covering his spine that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Despite undergoing three surgeries to remove the tumor, Kamden has had to rely on a wheelchair throughout his childhood. Yet, these challenges have never stopped him from enjoying life, playing, and most importantly, forming deep friendships.

An Extraordinary Friendship

When Kamden met Paul Burnett in kindergarten, the two boys became inseparable almost immediately. Paul never saw Kamden as “different” or “disabled.” In his eyes, Kamden was just Kamden—a friend to play superheroes with, make funny videos, visit McDonald’s for Happy Meals, and enjoy the playground together.

“The real magic of their friendship is that Paul doesn’t see Kamden as disabled. Because of that, Kamden can truly be himself around him,” shared Kamden’s mother, Yvonne Houshan.

A Wheelchair That Hindered More Than Helped

Kamden’s current wheelchair, although necessary, was heavy, cumbersome, and sometimes unsafe. On one occasion, while the boys were playing on a farm, the wheelchair tipped forward, causing Kamden to fall. Paul witnessed the incident and felt a mix of shock and determination—he wanted to help his best friend.

The family couldn’t afford a new wheelchair because state healthcare programs only cover a replacement every five years, leaving Kamden stuck with a chair that no longer fit his growing body.

Paul’s Kind Heart

At just 8 years old, Paul decided to take action. He wanted to help Kamden get a new wheelchair—lighter, safer, and tailored to his needs. With his mother’s guidance, Paul set up a GoFundMe campaign and wrote a heartfelt message:

“Kamden has been my best friend since kindergarten. We love playing superheroes, going to McDonald’s for Happy Meals, and running around the park. My friend was born with a tumor in his spine and has used a wheelchair ever since I met him. His chair tips over a lot, which is bad, and it’s very hard for him to push because it’s so heavy. I want to help him get a new chair.”

In just two weeks, Paul’s honesty and compassion touched hearts across the community. The campaign raised $5,455—far surpassing the initial goal of $3,900—enough to provide Kamden with a fully customized wheelchair.

Now I can move easier, do more things, and feel more free.” His mother added emotionally: “This wheelchair doesn’t just help him move—it gives him confidence and happiness.
