The 90-Year-Old Woman Who Saved Over 10,000 Animals—and Still Isn’t Stopping

In a quiet village in Sussex, England, lives a woman whose heart has sheltered more lives than most of us could imagine. Her name is Barby Keel, and at 90 years old, while many choose comfort and rest, she still begins each morning to the chorus of clucking hens and the meows of expectant cats. With a bowl of food in her hands, she walks through the sanctuary she built, small in stature but vast in love.

For more than five decades, Barby has rescued over 10,000 animals—from abandoned dogs and stray cats to rabbits, horses, pigs, and even abused farm animals. To her, every pair of eyes is worth saving, every trembling breath worth protecting.

How it all began

Her story started in the 1970s with a soldier heading off to war who asked Barby to look after his dog. That one act of kindness grew into something far bigger than she could have imagined. A cat rescue followed, then another dog, then a rabbit. Soon, her small home blossomed into what would become the Barby Keel Animal Sanctuary—a safe haven for thousands of unwanted, forgotten, or mistreated animals.

“At first, it was just a few cats, then sheep, goats, horses. I simply couldn’t turn away,” she recalls.

A lifetime of sacrifice

For more than 20 years, Barby ran the sanctuary on her own across 12 acres of land. Her days blurred into endless cycles of feeding, cleaning, nursing, and comforting. She rarely left the sanctuary, except to buy supplies or join her local darts team. Holidays, free time, even relationships—she sacrificed them all.

At one point, her partner gave her an ultimatum: “It’s either me or the animals.” Without hesitation, Barby chose the animals.

“They are my family,” she says firmly. “If someone can’t accept that, then they don’t belong in my life.”

Fighting battles beyond the farm

Barby’s journey wasn’t free from struggle. She fought cancer three times, but not even illness could keep her away from her animals. “Some days I could barely stand, but then I’d feel a tiny nudge, a nose pressed into my hand, or see a pair of eyes looking at me with hope… and I remembered why I had to keep going.”

Many of the animals she rescued went on to find loving homes, but many more remained, living out their days in peace under her care.

A sanctuary of second chances

Today, the Barby Keel Animal Sanctuary is home to more than 600 animals: 160 cats, 16 pigs, 8 dogs, 6 horses, 100 chickens, 80 rabbits, and countless others. Every one of them carries a story of loss, abandonment, or cruelty—and every one of them found safety because of her.

The sanctuary survives through donations and volunteers. Each Sunday, it opens its gates to the public, inviting families to walk the grounds, meet the animals, and experience the joy of second chances. There’s even a small thrift shop selling affordable pet supplies, because Barby knows that kindness should be shared with people as well as animals.

No plans to stop

Even now, at 90, Barby still tends to her animals each morning, though she admits she’s slowing down. “I know my limits. I can’t handle the big animals like I used to. But as long as I can stand, I’ll keep going. This is my life—and I’m grateful for it.”

A legacy of love

One day, Barby may no longer walk the paths of her sanctuary, but her legacy will live on in every life she’s saved. Her story proves something simple yet profound:

👉 When you live with unconditional love, you never truly grow old. 🌿❤️
